“The Unholy” is a well-made commercial religious horror film with tight scares. Its spooks and devils manifest themselves within a mainstream version of Christianity, making it sound no more than last week's "Exorcist" ripoff or last year's dose of the "Conjuring" trilogy. However, “The Unholy” has a religious narrative that works in its favour.
When a deaf adolescent girl sees the Devil in the trunk of the world's scariest-looking tree, she stumbles onto another deeper storey. She performs a couple of miracle cures while quivering with holy ecstasy, and as word goes out owing to Fenn's stories, her modest hamlet transforms into a modern-day Lourdes. Is the Devil, however, who she claims to be? "The Unholy," based on James Herbert's 1983 novel Shrine, is a fairly ordinary religious horror film that arrives just in time for Good Friday. It has some great jump scares, but the execution is a little repetitive, with portions that feel sketched-in rather than fleshed-out, and only a passing interest in Herbert's novel theme. What happens when the impure cloaks itself in the cloak of holiness? "Wherever God goes, the unholy follows," claims a local priest. Yes, you are correct.

“The Unholy,” which was written
and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos, is based on a 1983 James Herbert novel and
might almost be classified as a faith-based horror film. We all know the film
won't be all sweetness and light, but what matters is how firmly it believes in
them. That is the source of its dark side's power. Every horror film pits good
against evil, but this one is genuinely a holy war.
Evan , who has worked as a screenwriter on films like "Hercules" and "The Huntsman: Winter's War," directs his debut feature film, and though he hits the expected megaplex horror beats, he does so with a streamlined coherence and directness.
